Our history

How Caafi Health first started

Caafi Health's journey sprung out of the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. At that time, Huda Hajinur, one of our Directors, was a nurse and vaccine coach. Huda was working in the heart of Bristol, reaching out to communities who were having problems accessing healthcare. Her advice and support resulted in many extra people receiving the Covid-19 vaccine.

Tackling health inequalities through community engagement

Huda’s approach showed it was possible to reduce health inequalities by:

  • Engaging with local people in familiar spots, like community halls.

  • Offering health advice in various languages.

  • Addressing cultural health concerns directly.

  • Ensuring individuals could voice their health concerns to professionals.

A partnership for progress

Asha Mohamed, a social worker, teamed up with Huda in 2021. After seeing so many care homes delivering poor quality care, Asha was inspired to create a new care business that could complement Huda’s community engagement projects.

Asha’s professional background brought a deep understanding of how socioeconomic influences, prejudice and inequality can impact on communities. Her outlook informed the clinically-focused community engagement work that Huda was undertaking, strengthening the overall service offer of Caafi Health. With Asha's leadership skills, a shared vision of equal health and care for all, and more projects coming their way, the team felt the need for a bigger platform. In April 2021, Caafi Health came to life as a
Community Interest Company - a type of social enterprise.

Registration with the Care Quality Commission

Our registration with the Care Quality Commission in August 2021 was a milestone that paved the way for us to introduce home care services. While the fight against Covid-19 continued, it was clear our community-focused approach was encouraging locals to be proactive about their health. This ranged from regular cancer screenings to adopting healthier lifestyles, NHS health checks, vaccinations for children, and more.

Expanding our reach and impact

By November 2021, Caafi Health began hosting health-focused events, offering more health checks, and expanding our home care services.

Today, the Caafi Health team has grown to 18 colleagues, joined by another 30 colleagues who provide our Home Care support.

“We have definitely seen the clinics as a positive experience for the community, and
for our own organisation. ”
